Today's students must be prepared to venture into the world as Global Citizens. Our students will be faced with the task of solving many of the world's larger problems in the future. To be successful they will need to know how to problem solve, strategize, communicate, persevere, and cooperate. The materials and supplies I am requesting for my classroom are the perfect starting point to implement a "Games and Strategy" elective for my Middle School students that I hope will foster the mindset needed for them to thrive in their future educational and professional careers. By giving students access to an elective that encourages them to use critical thinking skills, build healthy social relationships, and innovate I hope to cultivate enriching habits of the mind that will support them throughout their entire lives. The games I have chosen all foster specific skills that my students will have the opportunity to practice and strengthen throughout their enrichment hour. Some of the skills and habits encouraged by these specific games are creative problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking, social skills, mathematics, language, geography, and social awareness. This elective will take the form of a project based course that emphasizes game mechanics, good game design, and social relevance. Students will have the opportunity to create their own game at the end of the course as a culminating project that utilizes all of the skills they have learned through the trimester.
