Our school sits on the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano, surrounded by what was once sugar cane fields and plantation housing. Many of my students are 3 or 4 generations removed from the hard working contract laborers who came to the Kingdom of Hawaii from China, Japan, the Philipines, Portugal and more to work the cane fields and stayed to make Hilo their home alongside Native Hawaiians and other more recent settlers. These fabulous firsties are ready to get down to the business of learning! We will have full-time in-person learning for the first time since the COVID-19 shut down and will need all the help we can get addressing learning loss!

About my class
