My classroom is severely lacking in functional technology. We only have 4 student computers. Only 2 of them work and the other 2 run incredibly slow. In the past, I used these computers so that my students could electronically interact with books during their Listen to Reading center, which is part of our Daily 5. Daily 5 allows me to have my students in independent work while I work with reading groups on targeted reading instruction. The Kindles will be used to replace our outdated computers and allow my students to fully participate in the center which will, in turn, allow me to more fully focus on helping them reach their reading goals. Technology is a HUGE motivation for my students. Using the Kindles will allow them to use apps like EPIC books to read books that interest them, which is also a huge motivation. Most of my students come from homes that do not have the resources to afford technology. I want to be able to provide them with this kind of media as they are growing up in a digital world and will need to be familiar with how to navigate it.
