Reading and writing are literacy activities that take place daily in every classroom at every age and grade. Reading and writing accurately are important to success as our students learn to communicate in our world. These processes are connected and work together, yet are rarely taught in a systematic and cohesive way. This can result in students who may be able to read accurately but have trouble writing as they struggle to spell. This difficulty with spelling can also signal misunderstandings with letter sounds as students read. The Sonday Instructional System provides systematic instruction that is multisensory and focused on improving students' reading and spelling. It follows the metholodgy of Orton-Gillingham, which the National Reading Panel found to be a successful approach in meeting the needs of struggling readers and spellers. The multisensory approach of the Sonday System has been especially beneficial to committing new learning to long-memory since it utilizes the mind-body connection. Teaching reading and spelling in isolation as our basal program suggests just isn't as successful. The Sonday Instructional System will provide me with clear, structured lessons and directions when working with my students. It will take the guesswork out of planning and ensure that I am teaching all components of reading and spelling in an orderly fashion. This will allow me to spend more time teaching my students what they need instead of researching rules and creating lessons and resources myself. The Sonday Instructional System provides all materials required for teaching the lessons. This includes flash cards and word books, which will ensure that my students receive the practice that they need to be successful. These resources require a significant amount of time to create on my own and aren't nearly as effective as those created by the program.
