Many of my students come to school with educational and social barriers that are a result of poverty, foster or homeless status, and exposure to trauma. As an educator, I can only hope to remove some of the educational barriers that impact learning. This classroom project is meant to help students set goals, learn resilience and coping skills, and develop social awareness in an environment that does not restrict their creativity and meets their individual needs.
Students deserve to have opportunities that help them discover their strengths despite their obstacles. My students receive different interventions such as small-group social skills support, implementation of behavior contracts, and token systems. Implementing interventions, incentive systems, and school-wide initiatives can be costly. I currently run a school-wide student store, provide attendance incentives monthly, and have positive behavior parties monthly to celebrate student success. My school does its best to provide me with resources to make all of these things possible but oftentimes I spend my own money to ensure these initiatives continue.
My students would benefit from flexible seating, art materials, and socio-emotional resources. It is also important to celebrate school-wide student successes by taking pictures and displaying them for the school community to see. I currently use the camera on my phone to take these photos. My goal is to also get a green screen so that students can learn to report on weekly events, becoming active citizens, and film a broadcast monthly to encourage appropriate communication. We would really like a camera that also records video for this project. I want to use any donations as a way to help my students explore, grow, and be creative. As students learn their strengths, they will develop the confidence to tackle difficult tasks, eliminating some of the barriers they face daily.
