As a Language Arts teacher, I constantly hear middle school students boast about how much they hate reading. I feebly try to convince them that reading is amazing and life-changing... but sadly my classroom only holds one tiny shelf of hand-me-down books that don't really reflect how amazing and life-changing they really can be. This school year, my goal is to change all that! I truly believe that books are the foundation of learning and empathy. They help students build vocabulary, understand grammar, and develop strong reading skills. They also help students expand creativity and imagination, experience life from another point of view, and even relate to characters that are similar to them when they feel that there is no one out there to relate to. I would love to teach my students to love reading because there are so many benefits to it, and I believe that begins with being able to expose them to books that are interesting and relatable. I will be starting a Book a Month project this school year and will definitely need more books available in my classroom!
