The students in our class come from the same neighborhood, but represent a wide spectrum of learners. As a special education classroom with two teachers, we know that students learn best in small groups and through interesting projects that they create with their hands. We ground learning in the tangible experiences like taking community walks to neighborhood parks to collect pictures and objects that remind us of our experiences. The students use the evidence from these trips to inspire their writing or to use as evidence to persuade their local councilman to add a new element to the park. Aside from benefiting more experiential learning, my students are part of a school community in which 92% of students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Additionally, school funding is low because of decreased enrollment with new charter schools in the area. The students are resilient, creative, and show great fortitude in meeting their individual goal of growing 1.5 years in reading levels
