I teach in a suburban New Jersey district. Many of my students are very busy with extra curricular activities and do not seem to have the love, interest, or time to dedicate to reading that I would hope for them to have. Last school year, with that in mind, I gradually moved away from the traditional "big" Reading book lessons and ventured into a Reading Workshop environment where my students could self-select from a few novels and texts that were "just right" for their independent reading levels. I cannot express my amazement when the children started to ask to read everyday. Seeing 23 children under desks, in corners of the room, and in a myriad of other places reading independently and understanding what they were reading was inspiring. Even my reluctant readers asked to read and loved to share the connections they had made with the characters in their books. Some of the students even created their own book clubs within the classroom to showcase their favorite book selections.
