  • TGuth's Booktok Cafe

    Funded Aug 13, 2023

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for investing in my classroom and investing in my students. Chronic absenteeism is high right now, and the desire to read has also declined. My students love these books and the rich conversations we have about the stories. It isn´t hard to get them to read these and it truly melts my heart. The lamps I received have also been welcomed positively by my students. They love the ambiance they create in the room and they are already asking for more of them! Thank you so much for bringing smiles to my classroom again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Guthridge

  • Book Talks in the Comfort Zone

    Funded Sep 28, 2022

Thank you so much for providing flexible seating in my classroom! My students have loved the different options for seating. This has made the atmosphere in my class so much more comfortable and enjoyable for the students. Whether we are working independently, as a group, or working with partners-students are more engaged in their learning because they are not confined to a desk every day. Thank you for helping me make my classroom a safe place for all students to learn and grow. Students love to talk about the books we read and our flexible seating makes my class have a more coffee shop feel. Thank you so much!!!”

  • Creating Peace in the Chaos

    Funded Feb 8, 2022

My students have benefitted so much from this grant. By using these board games and Jenga games, they are finetuning their social and communication skills. The class novels I was able to add to my classroom library have added more choice reading which fosters the ability to focus. The bean bags have given my students added more flexible seating to be comfortable while learning, Thank you so much for allowing me to meet my students' needs right where they are. I appreciate your contributions and your interest in helping me create the perfect atmosphere where kids will want to learn.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Guthridge

  • Reading for Real Life Connections!

    Funded Aug 25, 2016

This has been an amazing year of reading in my classroom thanks to donors choose donors. My AP students read "Kite Runner" for their summer assignment, so we read "I am Malala" right after that. They were able to make many connections between the books while learning about the different cultures. We had Socratic Seminars to discuss the books and did many projects to help them connect to the book even more. My students created "mock charities" while learning about the charity Malala created for education.

My Pre-AP students read "For One More Day" at the end of the year. They will be reading a Mitch Albom non-fiction book next year, so reading one of his fiction books will help them while studying how the author writes non-fiction and fiction. We had great discussions about death and how we treat our loved ones while they are still alive.

My students actually loved reading these books, and never complained about reading. They discussed the books outside the classroom as well, which made my heart happy. It is difficult to get students to read so when they do it on their own, we celebrate. I had students who were not even in my class asking if they could borrow one of my books to read because their friends talked so highly of it. Thank you, donors choose and thank you, donors, for helping make this possible for my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Guthridge

I want to give my students a chance to read relevant books they might not otherwise read. Reading books is becoming a lost art because this is a media-driven generation. I want my students to see how important literature still is and how reading an actual book can help them become more successful in life by making those real world connections using critical thinking skills. I understand that every student will not go to college, but I want them to all be successful. Reading consistently and sharpening their critical thinking skills will help students be successful not only in school, but in life after school.
