I have read research on alternative seating in classrooms and the impact on students' attention. Last year, I decided to see what all of the hype was about. I purchased some large bouncy balls to put in crates to create seats that allowed movement. I also have pillows, bean bags, and a claw foot tub for them to sit in to do their work. I do not assign them a seat during independent work time, I allow them to choose where they would like to work. This allows them to be comfortable and some seats allow for them to bounce some of their energy out in a productive way! I was amazed at how quiet they were while completing their independent work. I looked up from teaching a small reading group and saw all 21 of my kindergarteners working on their work! They weren't using crayons as cars or playing with their neighbor, they were completing their assignment!!! I felt like I had hit the teacher lottery seeing all of my kids working so hard! One Student that usually had trouble completing his 2 reading assignments each day actually finished his whole packet for the week by Tuesday! I would like to add these stools to my alternative seating to allow more choices for my hard workers and give them an outlet for all of their bottled up energy!
