I teach at a Special Act School District in Yonkers, NY. We service 150 students who are all classified as Learning Disabled or Emotionally Disabled. My students constantly struggle to stay off the streets and in the classroom. I wish I could say that we save all of our kids, but the fact is, we do our best. Each year, students come to class as non-readers, without ever having read a book. And it's our job to improve their literacy, and develop their writing and math skills. There is nothing more difficult than trying to help someone that doesn't want to be helped. Our kids often see no value in reading and writing, as it affects their lives. We must make the text come alive, grasping their curiosity, challenging their imagination, and engaging their minds.
