  • Help Students Through Project Based Learning!

    Funded Oct 20, 2015

Thank you for your generous donation to our classroom!! I remember the day I received the email notifying me that the project had been fully funded--I was so excited!! My photos include pictures of students using the Mr. Sketch markers to answer text dependent questions following a reading assignment. Students work in collaborative groups to discuss and answer questions, annotate their answers with different colors, and finally examine their responses in a "gallery walk."

One thing I have to share is how much the students LOVE to use the markers and smell the scent as they work!! It brings a sense of nostalgia, even in their short 15-years, that reminds them of childhood. My high school students are as tall, or taller than I am, but love stickers and stamps, so these colorful, scented markers encourage their efforts.

In addition, students have used (as recently as yesterday March 2) the clicker while presenting to the class. It gives them a sense of empowerment and success that I'm so proud to watch. Mary Jane, your donations are used daily and greatly appreciated in our classroom. Thank you so much!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Garcia

  • Annotating Text!!

    Funded Mar 15, 2014

First of all, thank you for your generous donation to my Donors Choose project!! It was so exciting to watch the site and receive emails notifying me of donations made by each of you! This was my first experience using Donors Choose and it proved to be successful for all involved!!

Since I teach high school English, I wanted to expose my students to colorful and up-to-date articles from New York Times Upfront magazine in an effort to show them that reading for school can be fun! The articles in the issues are relevant to teens and connect with adolescents, in a way that many of the scholarly articles I use in the classroom do not, so this made our weekly Article of the Week assignment more exciting!! The students expressed interest right away and showed that they wanted to read the articles. They commented that they liked the photos and graphics accompanied with the articles.

As previously mentioned, I assign an Article of the Week (AOW) so students have hands on experience interacting with complex text. Students are asked to annotate the text and respond to text dependent questions which requires them to cite textual evidence.

This project boosted my teaching and students' learning because it gave them an opportunity to interact with text that comes from a world famous source, The New York Times, and exposed them to world issues such as elephant poaching for ivory in Africa on the Ivory Coast. Most students were unaware of the Ivory Coast and the issues happening there.

With sincere thanks and admiration to helping fund this project, I want to give a heart-felt thank you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Garcia

This classroom project was brought to life by AT&T Foundation and 9 other donors.
My students are 9th and 10th grade students who are in a college prep ELA course. Most of my students' parents did not graduate high school. Many of my students are language learners and find little motivation inside the classroom. They are often more inclined to complete an activity when it is relevant to them so I strive to make connections between classroom activities (reading, assignment, content, etc.). My students are somewhat involved in extracurricular activities such as clubs and sports. My students are polite and respectful students who try to demonstrate an earnest effort. My school is 80% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 8% other such as Caucasian, Pacific Islander and African American. Our school is Title I and about 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school facilities are very old and are currently in the process of modernization.
