The novel sets I have selected focus on issues such as homelessness, poverty, and overcoming adversity. These sets will allow students to make connections and develop an increased understanding of adversity and resilience. Additionally, these novels will be used to promote academic language and discussions in the classroom. My goal is for my students to make real-world connections through their readings and promote a deeper understanding in dealing with real-world challenges that will assist in overcoming their many adversities. Students will build their literacy skills through student-led literature circles. My goal is to use the novel sets to develop empathy regarding issues in today’s society. The books will also serve as a classroom library for students to self-select reading material. Additionally, our books will assist as mentor texts and resources for students to improve their reading and writing skills in all content areas. My students will develop a deeper understanding of the literature to make real-world connections.
