  • Digging Deep into Nonfiction Text

    Funded Dec 2, 2020

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom and this project. Your donation allowed my students to have access to a set of really cool paired text sets. I used and will be able to use them in my future classroom during reading group time. My students were very excited to read and discuss the nonfiction genre text all about Elephants but also read a fiction text about and Elephant. We were able to compare the different text selections dicussing the different elements that made the story a fiction text and the nonfiction text. This is very important for our kids to learn and it was great to see my students very engaged in this learning time together during small group instruction.

Nonfiction text is interesting to read for all learners in the classroom and I found it interesting that both my struggling readers enjoyed these new books and stories as well as my higher-level reading students. The great thing about these resources is that they were exposed to even more concepts and ideas with colorful pictures to support the text.

I attempt to find nonfiction text resources but often am unable to print with color therefore it was very nice to have a colorful engaging resource for our class to use for reading instruction and discussion. More importantly, I was impressed with how sturdy these resources and books were for use many times. Thank you again for supporting our classroom project and my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gilger

  • Google Classroom Soaring to New Levels

    Funded Jul 16, 2020

Thank you for your generosity and kindness. You have provided great digital resources with your donation to encourage learning. My students have been able to have interactive phonics lessons that include videos made and created with me teaching the concepts. The students then use digital tiles to build words using the lesson concepts. They have also enjoyed reading activities where they answer questions about the text. With your generosity my students have become tech savy all while continuing learn both in the classroom and remotely.”

  • Series Books Spark a Love for Reading!

    Funded Oct 26, 2018

Thank you so much for sponsoring our classroom and most of all supporting beginning readers at our school. My students were so excited to see the new books for our classroom library. They will be learning all about the writers of these two series books. Mo Williams is the author of the Pigeon books but also the author of another loved series in my room Elephant and Piggie. I am very excited to provide a variety of text for my students written by the same author. We are able to compare the different literature and writers craft both in writing but also as readers. It is very rewarding to see my students connect and want to choose high interest text daily.

Cynthia Rylant is another key author to highlight in my classroom. With your support you have provided my students with sixteen new Mr. Putter and Tabby books. My students have already enjoyed books from Cynthia Rylant such as Henry and Mudge but now have access to new books.

One of the major advantages to providing reading materials in my classroom is that students are able to pick their own books based on reading ability and interest for their independent reading. I have one student that had just been caught by the reading bug and has recently fallen in love with our new books. They can't wait to get their hands on each new book that I have put in our classroom. This has been very encouraging to see in my struggling reader classroom but also is humbling to know that there may not always be access at home for high quality literature but with your help and support I am able to put fun interesting books in the hands of my students.

Thank you for supporting and fostering a love for reading with these two sets of books written by wonderful authors.”

    With gratitude,

  • Opening a World of Adventures with a New Book Series!

    Funded Apr 12, 2018

Wow! These books are amazing! The joy and excitement for reading about the author Mo Williams and his books has been wonderful. I have introduced each new book to my classroom through Interactive read aloud. I stop at different places throughout the book and ask questions about the characters Elephant and Piggie. I have asked questions about the lessons that the author Mo Williams taught throughout the different books. Most of all, I have modeled expressive fluent reading to my students.

Now that I have introduced the books to my classroom as a whole my plan is to dive deeper into the books in small group reading instruction and also for the students to read on their own and respond to the books. In my classroom when the students arrive at school. They arrive as car riders or bus riders over a span of twenty to twenty-five minutes. Therefore, my students have reading bags where they are allowed to choose the books in their morning reading bag. To be honest these books literally were such hot and exciting new books to our classroom we had to set up a system in order to share these books with everyone.

This love for reading and excitement while reading is contagious and has truly been amazing to witness. Thank you for impacting the learners in my classroom this year but also for many years to come with my future students. You truly have blessed my classroom! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gilger

  • Tune Kids into Reading

    Funded Jan 28, 2012

Thank you for your generous donation to my classroom. Without donors like you classrooms across America would be limited to teaching without 21st century skills.

My students love the updated listening station. With the personal cd players the students listen to books on cd and have positive interactions with reading daily. They enjoy listening to the characters and narrators use expression. This is a great modeling tool for struggling readers in my classroom. My students enjoy these daily in reading stations and have asked often to listen to the stories during inside recess.

Listening centers give students an experience with literature that provide a stepping stone for listening skills which is a key component to open the door for learning to read. The more my students listen to stories on cd the more they will develop new vocabulary words that are found in the texts.

You have provided a great learning tool and have opened the door for many children in my classroom to experience reading in a fun way.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gilger

My students come from a smaller rural community that has a central down town. We are a second grade class that is developing independence to prepare for future grades through literacy centers, math hands on games, and technology. My students are excited for new learning experiences. They are always happy to expand their learning with extension activities. These activities bring to life the true learning. We love to read about different authors and love the community of learners that we are building here at Dowds Elementary.
