My students have watched several videos of different groups using materials such as 5 gallon buckets, plastic trash cans, and percussion equipment to create rhythmic pieces that are exciting and engaging. As students get older, it is harder to find classroom music that students are excited to rehearse and perform. Asking students to think outside of the box and use their imaginations to create something of their own and experience musical instruments in a new light will provide ownership and self-engagement with an end goal of performance in sight. My students have also had the privilege of working with a guest presenter using materials, similar to as I have requested, to experiment and discover what they can do when given the opportunity.
