What was the book that made you love reading as a child? Was it an adventure book or maybe a mystery? I am not naive; not everyone loves to read, but was there a book that at least piqued your interest enough to finish it and maybe, just maybe, read another one within the genre? Giving children the freedom to choose books that appeal to their interests is the key to opening up their imagination and joy of reading. At my school, we do not have a library on campus. As a second year teacher, I have not collected a large or diverse classroom library. I have the same students as I did last year. This means that they have the same book selection in my classroom because I could not go out and redo my entire classroom library. These books would give my students the option to read new books at their reading level, books that they thoroughly enjoy and cannot put down! They will be able to have access to popular series for their age as well as biographies of historical figures, sports stars, and other celebrities! I also included books on the list that are not necessarily at their reading level, but are good books to read aloud as a class, as they have important lessons to be learned from them. I believe that if kids are exposed to all different kinds of books their reading comprehension, as well as their vocabulary, will get better! This is why I am creating a class reading competition where the kids will strive to read 1,000,000 words by the end of the year, becoming millionaires! My goal is to bring back reading in a generation in which books are being forgotten!
