As the primary biliteracy support teacher for my school, I work with students in 1st and 2nd grade to help them become better readers and writers in both English and Spanish. Being bilingual and a part of a Dual Language school community fosters cross-cultural respect and appreciation, preparing my students to be citizens who care about social justice. My students come from a low-income, urban community-about 90% qualify for free lunch. Many are first generation students in the US school system, and many of their families came to the US in order to give their children a better education and future opportunities.
