My students and I are very excited about utilizing flexible seating in our classroom! They are being very responsible about making good choices for what type of seating works best for each of their individual learning styles. Since beginning to offer flexible seating in our classroom, every student has taken more personal responsibility for their own learning. Even those students who struggle to stay focused in a regular classroom setting and sometimes tend to act out are now realizing that they do have the ability to stay on task if they pay attention to the way they work best and when they are given choices for where they sit, their confidence in themselves soars. What an empowering feeling that is for them! The one thing we still need in order to truly use our classroom space as effectively as possible is a place to gather for whole group instruction where we can easily collaborate with each other without sitting on the cold, hard floor. At the present time, my students need to be seated in chairs for whole group instruction. Twenty six students are spread out around the room and are not as easily able to work with one another as they would be if we had a comfortable and centralized gathering space in the classroom. In addition, a large rug will allow my students more options for spreading out throughout the room to work independently or in small collaborative groups if they can sit on the carpet instead of always needing a chair, stability ball, or cushion. Student choice is paramount in facilitating a nurturing learning environment for all learning styles!
