  • Keeping It Cool: A Classroom Calming Corner

    Funded May 23, 2024

My students and I want to thank you for making our calming corner a reality. We have learned so much from having a space that allows us to take a moment to figure out how to manage our emotions, calm down our minds & bodies, and then quickly get back to work.

When my first graders walked in the door and saw the cozy Calming Corner teepee and the bright sky blue beanbag, their faces lit up with excitement and curiosity. It only took them one day to co-create the norms and protocols for proper and responsible use. We created a check-in/ reservation book where the students write why they want or need to use the calming corner. I tied it to our school and district's learning focus this year, which is writing across content areas by having the students fill out a short evaluation sheet from ClassDojo that they complete within a week from using the calming corner. They select the tool or strategy that they want to implement to help them regulate their emotions. They can choose between the many resources that you graciously provided such as hugging the axolotl plush animal, using a coloring sheet to relax, or listening to music to make them feel happy again. It is incredible how it has changed the tone of our class from a hyper fast-paced stressful environment to a calm, respectful, caring, and safe environment for learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lozano

  • Time for Reading!

    Funded Nov 10, 2021

Thank you for giving my students the motivation to read and for making it fun! Before receiving the individual whiteboards and timers, my students lacked the enthusiasm to practice their reading fluency. You helped to build a love for reading that will impact my students in the most positive way.

They looked forward to Reading time because it meant being able to read with a partner and help each other improve in their score. The use of timers provided equity and access to all my students, regardless of their reading ability. It made them all feel productive and successful as they kept track of their reading stamina. As a bonus, the timers helped my students improve in their math skills as well, as they compared, added, and subtracted numbers each time!

Thanks to your generous donation, we have created a generation of life-long readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lozano

This past summer I enrolled in a Breathe for Change yoga class for educators that taught me how to become a yoga instructor so that I can bring the practice of yoga to my students and school community. My goal is to teach and model to my first graders how to use yoga to help them cope with stress, anxiety, or other social-emotional issues they may experience. Research shows that when students improve their social emotional well-being through yoga they also gain academic benefits. In order to help my students, I need the yoga mats and blocks to carry out these simple but valuable lessons. The mats and blocks for yoga are like the pencil and paper in writing. You can't do it without them. Through the practice of yoga, my students will obtain physical, mental, social, and emotional benefits that will last them a lifetime.
