  • Free Expression Empowers Lives (FEEL): Poetry to Amplify Student Voices

    Funded Aug 7, 2020

Thank you so much for funding this poetry project. My students and I appreciate your willingness to support our right to be empowered through exposure to strong and free voices! These current, relevant poetry collections will serve as inspiration for my students to experience free expression for themselves. Love to all.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Egly

  • Why Write? Exploring Motivation for Writing through Diverse Literature

    Funded Oct 31, 2019

Thank you so much for contributing to this project. My students have been able to understand so much more about the importance of writing in our world today by reading stories and perspectives of justice/injustice through their access to these books. Some students got excited about poetry for the first time and began writing and sharing their own poetry in response to their personal lives and in response to the COVID pandemic and to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Other students enjoyed independent reading and were simply excited just to have more books on the shelf to choose from.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Egly

  • The Right Stuff for a Lit Classroom

    Funded Mar 21, 2020

Thank you so much for contributing to this project! Although we are on hold due to school closure, these materials will mean so much to my students as soon as we return. Students in Poetry Club will be so excited to have new composition books for drafting and a cozy place to chill, think, read, and write.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Egly

  • Courageous Conversations: Empowering Voices Through Reading Real Lives

    Funded Feb 24, 2019

Thanks to your generous donations, our SWAG (Strong Women Achieving Greatness) club was able to read Becoming, by Michelle Obama. The girls in this club were empowered through the leadership opportunity of facilitating a book club discussion with teachers, peers, administrators, and community members. Many of these girls have never spoken in front of such a group, and were able to step out of their comfort zones. They worked in pairs or small groups to create questions and took turns posing their questions to the group and managing the discussion.

Thank you so much for providing the resources to make this enrichment possible. These books will be used in the future in an African American Literature class and for choice reading, literature circles, and memoir study.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Egly

  • Courageous Conversations: Bridging Cultural Divides Through Engaging YA Literature

    Funded Dec 21, 2018

Thank you so much for funding these Dear Martin books. The conversation that resulted from our book club helped my students to see themselves as influential members of a larger community, beyond their families, friends, and school.

One student said, "I loved it; seeing teachers and folks from the community support African Americans. I'd love to see more of it. Thank you for supporting us. At times I didn't agree with some folks' opinions, but I tried to view it from their perspective." Another student shared his feelings about the book: "I felt strong emotions towards the book. As I read the part of Manny and Justyce being shot, I was reminded of Trayvon Martin and how they were innocent, but portrayed as a bad person." Another student reflected on the impact of having staff members read and discuss along with students: "It was good for our white teachers to have a better understanding of our African American students."

Once again, we are so grateful that your donations allowed us to create this project, which helped students understand that reading can lead to powerful conversations that change lives and society.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Egly

Your donation to this project will allow our students to participate in a community book club, led by teachers, mentors, and student leaders, that will use the book Dear Martin to spark difficult conversations on race and privilege. Our plan is to break down cultural and historic barriers that impact our society and our students through the experience of reading a book as a larger community group. Students will have the opportunity to read the book alongside teachers, mentors, members of the faith community, and professors from local colleges. In doing so, we will elevate voices of the students, and open up the opportunity for them to become experts. Once they have read the book, they will participate in an event where we come together to discuss the text and share ideas and personal experiences. Our culminating event will be an after-school gathering where participants will alternate between large group facilitation and small group discussion. Your donation will help motivate students to be involved in issues of social justice and to make changes in society by beginning with open and honest dialogue.
