  • Science Rocks!

    Funded Oct 15, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donation to Science Rocks! The lab supplies are being used to teach a rigorous rock and mineral unit. My students are thrilled with the daily experiments and are thriving on the advanced curriculum. The safety glasses are used over and over for not only this unit, but also for other science units. The tweezers have come in handy repeatedly as we investigate. I would not of been able to teach this unit without your help. Your gift means so much to the elementary students and will encourage them to study science for years to come.”

  • Environmental Field Study

    Funded Sep 29, 2011

Thank you so much for your donation to Environmental Field Study. The students have taken four field trips to their outdoor classroom so far. They love being scientists and the supplies you purchased have been used and will continue to be used all year long. So far we have examined the different species of trees in our local state park, studied a common disease in the forest, looked for animals and insects that depend on the trees, collected core samples, measured the height and diameter of the trees and calculated how many board feet would be in one tree. The students will never forget this year long study of their local forest ecosystem.”

  • Environmental Science DVDs

    Funded Feb 12, 2011

Thank you so much for your donation to Environmental Science DVDs. The students have loved looking at the DVDs and I'm amazed at how much information they learned by just watching them. Parents have even commented on the quality and scientific information of these particular DVDs. My science program is not only stronger, but students are excited about protecting their environment and many are considering a career in environmental science. I look forward to using these DVDs for years and years to come. ”

  • Environmental Mysteries

    Funded Dec 1, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation to Environmental Mysteries. The students were overjoyed to have so many intriguing books available to read and then discuss in small groups. They devoured the mysteries and we were able to have rich discussions on not only the environmental message, but also on specific literary devices the authors used. After reading so many mysteries, my students are now writing their own mystery book.

It's wonderful to know that Disney cares about our children and the environment.”

  • Inquiring Minds Waiting to Learn

    Funded Dec 6, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation that provided quality science trade books for my highly capable students. They have been devouring the books and their attitude towards nonfiction text is changing. A favorite of the class is Animals Up Close by Igor Siwanowicz. The pictures are fabulous and the text is both interesting and rigorous.

Science is an important subject and I appreciate having the resources to integrate it with reading. I look forward to using these books every year in my classroom. ”

  • Bird Study

    Funded Sep 17, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation of supplies for my classroom project on birds. The project was a huge success and enjoyed by my students. Students used the books for individual research. The bird feet molds, however, captured my students' attention the most. We made a huge mess mixing the plaster and then pouring it into the personally selected molds. Students couldn't wait to see how they turned out and proudly showed them off to family and friends when they dried. ”

  • Learning about Birds through Watercolor Painting

    Funded Nov 4, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation of art supplies for my classroom project "Learning About Birds Through Watercolor." The project was a huge success and enjoyed by both students and our community.

I was amazed at the talent in my classroom. Students looked forward to our lessons and the art that was produced was truly outstanding. Our librarian insisted that we showcase our work in the school library for everyone to enjoy. Parents were especially proud and many pictures were framed and hung in places of honor at home.

Students learned not only how to paint with watercolors but also learned about five different birds that live in our local area. Students were sponges and quickly started to teach others about the local birds. I was so proud! Many parents commented on how much their student learned. We were all sad for this project to end.”

  • Birds, Birds, Birds

    Funded Apr 21, 2010

We have just started our unit on birds. Just this week the students set up their backyard bird feeders and are collecting scientific data. The field guides and binoculars allow the students to look closely at the birds and also to identify them.

I was pleased and surprised at how excited the children are about this project--only a few students had winter bird feeders at their house. They are especially excited about the binoculars. I plan to also use the binoculars when we go to environmental camp later in the spring. I'm certain this will be this year's favorite project.”

  • Protecting the Environment: Why Should I Bother?

    Funded Apr 16, 2010

Thank you so much for providing our school with 35 copies of the book Why Should I Bother About the Planet? It continues to amaze me that many people do not understand what we are doing to our planet and what they can do to make a difference. Providing both teachers and students with factual information is a key to changing attitudes.

The students enjoyed the easy to read and understand text and learned a great deal. It provided an introduction to the many environmental issues we are facing in our world. I plan to use this book each year to teach about the environment and make it available to other teachers who would like to use the class set.”

  • Discovering the Ancient Art of Chinese Brush Painting

    Funded Apr 20, 2010

The first six weeks of school has been an inspiration to me. My students absolutely loved the Chinese brush painting. Including art into this unit made the whole culture come alive because we were able to explore the symbolism in the art. Students tried the traditional painting methods like grinding their own paint and painting on rice paper. At the end, each student picked their two favorite paintings, added their "Chinese" name, and placed their red stamp of ownership like in traditional brush paintings.

When students took a test over this unit, I was pleased at how much information they remembered. I even have four students who are starting Chinese language lessons after school tonight. What a wonderful way to learn about another culture.”
