My students live in a high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Many live in a single parent or grandparent household where that parent/grandparent works to provide for the family on a tight budget that supplies the necessities. They attend a K-8 elementary school in a tough neighborhood. The students are in sixth grade, which is a critical year for many of them, because they struggle with wanting to be independent and needing guidance. As if this struggle was not enough to deal with they are exposed to the reality of poverty and crime. They want to succeed and reading is the key to their success. I want to improve reading levels with books they love, books they will not have access to unless you provide them.
