  • First Grade Phonics Fun!

    Funded Jul 14, 2021

My class and I can't thank you enough for your support! The materials that were provided through this project are used every week during our reading block. Some of the resources, such as the slates, I've used with very specific students in a small guided group. They love being able to use chalk and a blackboard, and the frame "forces" proper letter formation. The CVC and phonics cards are wonderful to use in my small group to teach students how to hear the sounds in words and how to hear the number of sounds in a word. I have used these a dozen times already in my small groups.

The magnetic letters and magnetic boards have been used the most often by the entire class. They practice spelling/building words using our phonics skill for that week. Some students are able to independently use them and others receive direct instruction in a small group. They are very engaging and the kids love to go to the word building center during their rotation! This center will get more and more complex throughout the year because the phonics/spelling skills progress. These reading materials have already had a huge impact in my small group differentiated instruction! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. David

  • Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader!

    Funded Aug 8, 2020

We just received our first copies of Time For Kids! We learned about the upcoming Presidential election and facts about both candidates. The students were so engaged throughout the entire lesson. In this week's edition we will be learning all about pumpkins, just in time for Halloween:) We have been using our writing journals to practice writing sentences and our sight words. They are great because they have a small box on each page for an illustration, so every child can be creative and feel successful as beginning writers. Thank you so much for showing your support for early childhood education. Words fail to express how grateful I truly am:)”

  • First Grade Super Scientists!

    Funded Aug 12, 2020

We are having so much fun in science in first grade! We have been using our magnifying lens inside and outside. Students have even asked if they can take then outside to recess to investigate and observe! Last week we learned how a thermometer measures temperature. Inside our classroom it was 78° and when we went outside the temperature on our thermometers jumped to almost 90° in less than 5 minutes. Gotta love the Florida sun!

The students are so much more engaged when they can do things that are hands-on and having individual tools for them has really helped, this year especially! Thank you so very much for supporting my students.”

  • Math Manipulatives Matter!

    Funded Aug 2, 2020

My first graders use their math manipulatives every single day! We are learning how to read a calendar, the names of the months, and how to count ones and tens for the days of school on our awesome wall calendar corner. I don't know how we would learn the basics of addition and subtraction without our counting bears and ten frames! My giant magnetic ten frames make it easy for the class to follow from their "socially distant" desks and they can easily see them through their plexiglass too:) We haven't started learning to tell time, but I can't wait to use the class set of Judy clocks! The students hadn't returned to school when the boxes arrived, but I can tell you I was excited enough for all of us! Throughout my classroom, I am reminded daily that teachers are loved and supported. Thank you!”

  • Wiggle While You Work!

    Funded Jul 28, 2017

I cannot tell you the difference that each of these products has had on my class and my students. The students that need to move and squirm during the day are able to do that with the bouncy bands. The kids who love to sit and read can concentrate and focus while pedaling away on the peddlers. The wobble stools are my favorite, though, because the kids can sit and wiggle while working with me at my table or they can wobble while reading. I am so thrilled with each of the different products and how they have impacted my students! Thank you so much for your support. It means the world to us:)”

  • Time for Kids, Time for Learning!

    Funded Sep 22, 2015

I can't thank you enough for your support of my students! We have been using the Time For Kids magazines as well as the online classroom app. The kids really enjoy the current events online as well as the science and sports stories. We use the weekly magazines in class for whole group instruction, text feature scavenger hunts, reading comprehension lessons, and partner reading. The weekly magazines come with 20 to a set, so I even have enough left over to share with another teacher for her reading center. It has really added so much to my instruction in all subjects! Thank you so much for your support!”

  • Technology Terminal = Technology For All

    Funded Sep 15, 2015

I cannot tell you how the iPads have impacted my students! Because of your generous donations, I have enough devices for students to be able to work in small groups or with partners every day. We use different educational apps for math and reading. They can read leveled books, practice multiplications facts, and complete research all on their own. Some students have their own devices to bring to class, and having the two extra iPads enables those students without their own devices to have access to online technology that they may not have at home.”

  • Poetry Partners Love to Read!

    Funded Dec 2, 2013

We received our box of poetry books last week. My class was so excited when it arrived, they cheered! We had just been given the date of the school-wide poetry slam event that morning on the announcements, so they were really excited to see the great new books they could choose from. After I briefly described each one, each student choose a book that they thought was interesting. It was exciting for me to see what they choose and why. One little girl choose a book by African-American poets and she said she choose it because the girl on the cover looked like her.

The students practice their poems for a day or two on their own. They come to me if they have trouble with a word or how it should be read. For the following couple days they practice reading their poems to a partner, which is why many of the pictures show them all over the room. Some like to stay at their desks or the reading center, while others "hide-out" in the cubbies or even under my table. Finally, on Friday, each student reads their poem in front of the class. They love to sit on the high stool and use the mic. I love when a student starts out with, "I am reading a free-verse poem, so it won't rhyme."

I am so grateful for your donations. Poetry helps them become more fluent and confident readers. My students will benefit from this poetry collection for years to come. Poetry Slam, here we come!”

  • National Building Museum Comes To Life in Third Grade!

    Funded Jul 19, 2013

I can't tell you how excited my students are when it is their turn to go to the STEM (science, technology, mathematics, and engineering) Center! I change the center activity every 4-6 weeks with the building sets I was able to buy with your donations!

The students can visit the center once to just "play" with the building sets. They need to see what they can do with them because the second time they visit, they plan their design or goal. What do they plan to build? After they explain their design on the design sheet, that's how I sneak in writing:), they can try to build their design. Once they are finished, they must explain whether or not their design worked or failed and why. Sneaky writing again:) When they are finished, they sketch out their design. Sometimes they plan to try and build something specific, "a rocket", or "a car that has wheels that can turn like a real car", or sometimes they plan to try and build a bigger building with more stories than their friend. Sometimes the plans are perfect, sometimes not! Sometimes their plans are so full of imagination that it is hard to believe an 8 year old came up with it!

The real payoff is when the student says my plan didn't work because... and they can explain, in writing, what went wrong. "The bottom was too weak to hold up the top, so next time I would..." or "The wheels couldn't turn because I had this long piece in the way blocking them." I am really looking forward to watching them build the marble runs! I can honestly say, the STEM Center has worked better than I even imagined it would:) Thank you!”

  • CD Players

    Funded Sep 18, 2008

I cannot thank you enough! My students will be so happy when we can begin this new fluency plan because of your extremely generous donation. We will be listening to Junie B. Jone and Magic Tree House Books on CD in no time! Donations, like yours, really do make a big difference in the lives of students everyday. I really can't tell you how much I truly appreciate your support. Thanks again for helping my students be the best readers they can be”
