  • PBIS Incentives

    Funded Oct 7, 2024

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS is a comprehensive program that schools adopt to implement positive and meaningful corrections for our students. The core philosophy of PBIS revolves around modeling desired behaviors, which encourages students to adopt those behaviors themselves.

At the end of each week, students are given the opportunity to "shop" at our classroom "store" as an incentive for earning school money. This initiative not only fosters the wanted behavioral changes among students but also serves as a practical application of math skills. As students engage in counting and spending their earned money, they are not only learning essential mathematical concepts but also making real-world connections.

Through this hands-on experience, students can see the relevance of their classroom learning in everyday life, reinforcing the importance of both positive behavior and academic skills. Ultimately, PBIS enhances the educational experience by integrating behavioral development with practical mathematics, preparing students for future real-life situations.”

Reading Readiness for Early Elementary Learners

Reading readiness is a crucial component of the educational journey for early elementary learners. Developing strong reading skills at this stage is essential for their overall learning and development. By focusing on various foundational skills, students can build a solid base for literacy that will support them throughout their academic careers.

One effective method of fostering reading readiness is through word manipulation exercises. These activities enable students to engage with language in a hands-on manner, allowing them to read and understand nonsense words. Although these words may not have meaning, practicing with them helps students to grasp phonetic concepts and improve their decoding skills.

In our small group study sessions, we place a significant emphasis on phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the individual sounds in words, which is vital for reading success. To facilitate this learning, we utilize letter trays and a variety of letters, giving students the opportunity to manipulate words physically. This tactile approach not only makes learning more engaging but also reinforces their understanding of how words are constructed.

Through these activities, students can create new words, explore nonsense words, and engage in phoneme deletion and addition exercises. Additionally, we focus on syllable mapping and word mapping techniques. Syllable mapping helps students break down words into their constituent parts, making it easier for them to read complex words. Word mapping allows learners to visualize the structure of words, further enhancing their literacy skills.

By integrating these strategies into our curriculum, we aim to foster a rich learning environment where early elementary learners develop the essential skills needed for successful reading. This comprehensive approach to reading readiness not only prepares students for future academic challenges but also instills a love for reading that can last a lifetime.”

  • Phonemic Awareness: an Essential Skill for Early Literacy

    Funded Sep 9, 2024

Early foundational skills play a crucial role in the overall development of students, particularly in their formative years. Before children even step into a classroom, they are actively engaged in learning and exploration within their environment. This early engagement is essential as it sets the stage for future academic success. Through various forms of discovery and language manipulation, children enhance their communication abilities, which are further developed through everyday conversations and the diverse linguistic exposure they receive.

Reading readiness is an integral component of this developmental journey. It is not merely about recognizing letters and words but encompasses a broader spectrum of skills that prepare children for the complexities of reading. The materials associated with this project are indispensable in fostering these critical reading skills. They provide children with the opportunity to manipulate letters practically, allowing them to experiment by creating nonsense words. This playful interaction not only enhances their understanding of phonetics but also encourages creativity and experimentation in language use.

Additionally, the use of mirrors as a tool in this learning process allows children to observe their mouth placements when forming words. This visual feedback helps them understand how words are articulated and contributes to their phonemic awareness. The combination of visual and tactile experiences makes the learning process more tangible and accessible for a diverse range of students. Engaging multiple senses in the educational experience not only caters to various learning styles but also deepens comprehension and retention of new concepts.

In conclusion, the significance of early foundational skills cannot be overstated. They form the bedrock of a child's educational journey, equipping them with essential tools for effective communication and literacy. By utilizing innovative materials and approaches, educators can create an enriching learning environment that supports the diverse needs of all students.”

  • Your special day!

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

The resources provided through this project have had a profound and meaningful impact on the lives of my students. Walking into the classroom, they are greeted with a sense of excitement and anticipation as they see the items waiting for them on their desks. The birthday wishes and recognition they receive from their peers and teachers fill them with a deep sense of joy and appreciation.

The students take great pride in wearing the birthday headbands, badges, and stickers as they move throughout the school. For some of my students, the celebration they experience at school is a welcome contrast to the lack of attention they may receive at home. These students are often overwhelmed by the outpouring of care and recognition they receive from the school community.”

The materials I have requested through the project will help my students with one of their Daily 5 areas. Daily 5 is a component that we incorporate into the ELA framework. The students need a group listening station so they can complete one area, Listen to Reading, while following along with a book. The children will be able to engage with the book while listening to the story. Students can look for visual clues and connections while listening to the story. This allows the children to be exposed to higher level vocabulary while making connections to text. The student becomes the teacher, leading the learning at their pace. They can choose to go back and review, or move forward. Each decision made by the student leads to a new area of content.
