Over the past few years, I have read about teachers switching to flexible seating in their classrooms. As I scoured over the wonderful pictures and room set ups on Pinterest, I always questioned its practicality. As I began to research, I realized that I had already been implementing flexible seating in parts of my classroom. Students were using padded crates during small group work and were using carpet squares and pillows in the reading center. The more I thought about it, the kids loved those options so why not give them a few more options to use during whole group work as well? This will be my fifth year teaching kindergarten and I know how active and fidgety five and six year olds can be when expected to sit in a standard chair. Arms and legs are everywhere and the chairs have no give. I am not comfortable sitting in a chair all day. How can I expect my students to be? I want to give them the option to lay down, sit on wobble chairs, stools, stand, or use comfy seats. They will be more comfortable, engaged and motivated! My students will be able to choose the seating option that is right for them which in turn, will allow them to take charge of their learning, help them stay on task and give them the opportunity to do their best work!
