It is crucial for sixth graders to know how to find the main idea of different kinds of nonfiction texts. With the book, Tracking Trash, my students will be able to explore the ways that pictures, maps, headings, and text structure all contribute to the main idea of the text. In addition, we will be going on a field trip to learn about how animals adapt to the ocean currents and trash in the ocean. Students will be focusing on similar topics in their science and communications classes. When students can connect their learning across several subject areas, they have much greater potential to learn. With this unit, my students can connect with real world issues facing our environment and can also focus on becoming greater readers.
