  • Young Readers Need More Books!

    Funded Oct 12, 2017

Thank you so much for our book collections! We are enjoying our collection of guided reading books that span from kindergarten to second grade reading levels. Our class is represented by varying reading abilities and because of the plethora of books, my students are able to choose books at their independent guided reading levels. My students are able to read during independent reading time daily which allows them develop stamina, confidence, and enjoyment for reading. The collection of books allow for my students to go "book shopping" weekly so they are able to read about various topics and not be bored with the same books. I am so grateful for your continued support of my classroom and for the love of reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cho

  • Building a Classroom Library

    Funded Oct 5, 2016

Thank you so much for the books and math materials. My students will use the leveled nonfiction and fiction books to improve their reading skills. Every student in my class will be able to "shop" for books at their independent reading level. This will help them practice strategies and skills that were taught in books that are at their reading level building confidence, reading stamina, fluency, and comprehension. Also, having fiction and nonfiction book choices will allow my students to choose books that are interesting to them. My students will be able to read about various topics and have been engrossed in their books! The math tools have been essential in practicing addition and subtraction concepts. Having hands-on tools have been so helpful for my class!”

    Mrs. Cho

  • Math Tools Needed!

    Funded Dec 13, 2015

We love our new math resources and math journals. Our school is a math and science magnet and we have been focusing on recording our thinking and providing evidence for our answers. This is a new way of thinking for most if not all my students, and the math tools, such as the rekenreks, magnetic pattern blocks, magnetic place value blocks, magnetic number lines, and magnetic ten frames have provided invaluable practice and exposure to number sense and patterns.

We have been using our math journals daily. We solve two math problems daily and the challenge I give my students is to find four different ways to solve a problem. At first, my students were stumped by the idea of showing four or more different strategies to solve a problem. Slowly with the consistent use of our math tools, showing four strategies for a math problem became easier and my students were so excited to share all the ways they came up with for the same answer. Some of the strategies my students used blew me away!

My students really enjoy math! Math time is their favorite part of the day. They always ask, "How many word problems are we solving today?" or "Can I share my strategy today?" I also look forward to our daily math time because of my students' excitement to use the math tools. Their understanding of how numbers work and their problem solving skills have improved daily and are getting honed each day because of our math tools and journals.

My classroom and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support in our learning this school year. I know my students are ready mathematically or the next school year, and I am looking forward to using the math tools for the next school years to come. Thank you so much! Words cannot express how much we have gained from your donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cho

  • iPad and Books for Reader's Workshop

    Funded Oct 13, 2015

Thank you for your generous donation towards our classroom! We love our new books and iPad. My students are very motivated and love to use technology to help them read. The books have been used for Interactive Read Aloud which is a time where I model comprehension strategies while I read. The iPad has allowed me to assess and monitor their reading

progress online. I can record their progress to determine their Guided Reading Level and monitor each student's growth.

My students also use the iPad to access a reading website our school has purchased access to. The reading website allows them to access books at their independent Guided Reading Level. They can choose to hear a story, read aloud, and answer comprehension questions based on the stories they read. The iPad provides the opportunity for my students to access the reading website.

My students come from different backgrounds and also vary greatly in their reading ability. Technology appeals to all of my students no matter what their reading ability is and motivates them to read. I have five students that receive Special Education services and I see their reading ability improving weekly.

We are so grateful for all the wonderful resources you have provided for our class!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cho

  • Building Our Class Leveled Library

    Funded Dec 19, 2014

Thank you so much for your generosity and support of our classroom! Your donation provided much need books for our Guided Reading Leveled Library. My students have worked so hard to learn how to read all year long, and now have accomplished their goal of becoming proficient readers. The students have been using the Leveled Library to read at their independent level and to improve their reading and comprehension skills.

I have also used the Leveled Library to differentiate my students' reading. I am able to meet the needs of my students now by offering them books at their independent level and also to help them become proficient readers by guiding them through more difficult text in small groups. I am focusing on phonics, fluency, and comprehension and with the Leveled Library I am better able to meet the needs of my students.

Thank you again for providing the means for my students to develop the love of reading and also for them to become proficient readers who are able to make meaningful connections to books while improving their reading skills. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cho

  • Reader's and Writer's Workshop: Books Needed!

    Funded Sep 15, 2014

My students and I cannot say how grateful and appreciative we are for your generous donation to our classroom. We were very excited to receive our new books and technology. My class is comprised of young, budding readers and writers. I now have books that can develop comprehension skills and strategies as well as serve as "mentor texts" that my students can emulate in their own writing. We know that reading and writing skills go hand in hand, and because of the quality books that we have received my students can listen to wonderful stories as well as aspire to write as well as the authors that we listen to.

The books are used during our Interactive Read Aloud and Shared Reading. During our Reader's Workshop, my students meet me on the rug. They are eager to listen to and respond to the stories. I also ask them comprehension questions as I read. They are also invited to read the stories independently as well. My students are doing a great job of interacting with and responding to the stories in their Reader's Notebook. During our Writer's Workshop, the books serve as a model for my students. We look at text features and author's purpose to help us develop our own skills as writers in a variety of genres, such as narrative, informational, and persuasive.

We want to thank you for your generous support. We love our books! Thank you so very much for making reading and writing fun and meaningful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cho

  • Creating Counting Collections

    Funded Aug 24, 2014

My class and I cannot say how grateful and appreciative we are for the tools and materials we have received. My students attend a Math and Science Magnet elementary school and are math and science minded. I wanted my students to learn math concepts with the aid of manipulatives to make the concepts we are learning tangible and concrete. My students were so excited when we opened our boxes of counting bears, beads, inch worms, pompoms, cubes, dinosaurs, and cars. They wanted to use them immediately, and I was very excited about incorporating the colorful counting tools in all of my math lessons.

We have been focused on creating "counting collections." Counting collections are an unique way for students to develop number sense in a safe environment where students are allowed to count objects using multiple strategies. It allows for differentiation where students who are just developing counting skills and students who have mastered number sense can explore patterns in numbers, count by twos, fives, or tens, and use their knowledge of place value to show a number. Developing number sense is a crucial skill for young mathematicians, and my students now have the tools to do so. My class and I thank you for your support and generosity. We could not have developed our math skills and knowledge in such a fun yet meaningful way without you. Thank you so very much!”

  • What Does Math + Music = ?

    Funded Oct 8, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous and thoughtful donation to our classroom project. My students are math-minded and attend a Math/ Science Magnet elementary school. They naturally enjoy math, but I wanted them to learn math facts and patterns in a new, fresh way: with music! They have definitely responded in a positive and enthusiastic way!

I have made binders with math patterns and rules that correlate with the music from the CDs. They not only enjoy hearing the music, but are actually learning math facts and rules as we do our "Math Drills to Thrill." I have heard some of my students sing particular songs to remember patterns, such as "near doubles" to solve addition and subtraction problems!

My students and I are grateful for our new math resources and will continue to use them to enhance our math knowledge to become mathematicians of the future! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

  • "Kindle" the Fire for Reading

    Funded Jan 30, 2012

I wanted to thank you all again for your donations towards our Kindle Fire tablets! I cannot tell you how much my students have been enjoying them. We use the tablets daily during our Workshop block, where we are developing and practicing our reading fluency and comprehension. We use a rotation system to share the tablets, and the students have become familiar with navigating through the tablet quite quickly. My students thoroughly enjoy using the tablets, and the tablets act as helpful academic tools, too!

My students have been reading e-books, such as Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad stories. We are now trying to compile a wish list of their favorite books to download onto the tablets. My students were already great readers, and now their love for reading is growing, too!

Thank you so much! Your support has meant so much to us!”
