  • Tuning in to Learning With a Music Carpet

    Funded Apr 1, 2025

I do not have words to express how thankful I am to everyone who has donated to this project! I can't wait to see all of the happy faces when the new carpet arrives. This carpet is going to look beautiful and bring color to our music room. The kids will also use it to learn how to read notes and music symbols during class for many years to come. For all of the parents who donated, keep an eye out on the school social media for pictures when our new carpet arrives! Again, thank you so much for supporting our music classroom.”

  • Teaching Special Learners in the Music Classroom

    Funded Mar 26, 2015

Thank you so much for helping me to take my summer class in Differentiating Instruction in the Music Class at Vandercook University. The information is very interesting and I am enjoying taking the classes. It has been helpful to see how I can take the skills I have in music and apply them to the skills I have with early childhood and special education. I have gotten some great ideas that I want to implement when school starts in the fall such are room arrangement and peer partners. I even have a very new ideas to use with my own children. I also have lots of information I am going to share with my music team to help us advocate for our students with special needs. I hope that these new skills will help me to integrate and include my students with special needs even more than I already do. Thank you again for your generous donation.”

  • Uke Can Help Us Play Ukulele

    Funded Jan 13, 2015

Thank you so much for your generous donations to my project! I was so surprised and excited at how fast the project was funded and how quickly the ukuleles showed up in my classroom. The kids have been anxiously watching me unpack them for the past two weeks. Every time I pull one out I get ooos and ahhhs from my classes. The fifth graders ask me every day when they are going to get to play them. I am working on putting together resources to teach ukulele since I am learning to play now as well. I am looking forward to playing with the fifth graders the last few weeks of school. Next year I will have a full ukulele unit for the 5th grade. I think this will be a great addition to my program. I teach the students about all of the instrument families. They have opportunities to play percussion and wind instruments in my classes, but not strings. We do not have any orchestra program in our district so this will give the kids an opportunity to play a string instrument, which they have not had in the past. Many students have already told me that someone in their family has a ukulele but they don't know how to play it. I am hoping I can give them the basic skills to play so that they can go home and keep learning. Thank you so much for this great opportunity for my students!”

  • Music and Technology: Ipads for the Music Class

    Funded Apr 15, 2014

Thank you so much for donating to my project. When my students heard that we now have enough IPads to have a center they all cheered. They have all been begging me to let their group go first. We have started using our IPads in centers and the students have been using the app Garage Band. They are able to play guitar, piano, and drum set on the IPad. They can also record their music and mix it together to create their very own song. They also can record their voices into their songs. The groups that have used the IPad so far are very happy and enthusiastic about being able to easily create their very own music. I look forward to putting the IPad into our regular music center rotation next year so that all of the students in the school get a chance to use them.

My fifth grade students were also able to use the IPad for their group project this year. Every year we do a project on Rock and Roll history. The students have to research a musician or group and do a presentation on them. This year the IPads made this much easier. Each group was able to use an IPad to do their research instead of everyone sharing 2 computers. They also were able to listen to music and see pictures of their musicians which enhanced their learning greatly.

I look forward to integrating the IPads into our curriculum more next year. I will be adding more music apps that will help the students learn about music over the summer. I also look forward to using the IPad to help with my many students with special needs. I have many students with physical disabilities that struggle to hold mallets and play instruments. Now they will be able to play digital instruments on the IPad and won't have to worry about holding mallets.

Thank you again for your generous donation.”

  • Feeling The Bass

    Funded Apr 17, 2012

Thank you for your very generous donation of the bass xylophone bars for my music classroom. Unfortunately, I have run out of time to use them for all the classes this year but I am looking forward to using them next year. The few classes that did have the opportunity to try them out thought they were very exciting. They have a beautiful low ringing sound. The classes that haven't used them have seen them and are very anxious to try them out. It will be so nice to have a full set of Orff instruments and you helped me to move in that direction. I am already planning the lessons for the fall using the new instruments. Thank you so much for your kindness and for supporting music in the schools! ”

  • It's Music to Our Ears!!!!!!

    Funded Dec 15, 2011

Thank you so much for your generosity. My students are enjoying there new supplies and listening center very much. It is wonderful to have the books so that the children can listen and read along with the music. We now have 10 different books to listen to and many more songs! Now the listening center can be helping with their literacy as well as their music skills.

The students love all of the books. I have even heard my fourth and fifth graders singing along to "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" and "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed". I only expected the younger kids to enjoy the songs but have been pleasantly surprised.

It has also been a huge time saver to have the listening center cart to keep all of the books, headphones, and CDs organized. They can clean up much fast now, which leaves time for other instruction or to work in a different center. The headphones are not getting tangled and pulled on which will hopefully help them to last longer.

All of the kids love their new listening center and so do I! Thanks again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chaussey

  • What's a Music Class Without a Piano?

    Funded Aug 19, 2011

My students are very excited about the new piano. From the first day it was in my room they were anxious to hear and play it. It is even better than I thought. I can hook it up to my computer so the students will be able to use it with the Smartboard and MIDI computer programs. I haven't started my centers yet but I plan to try to set it up as a composition center so they can use it to write their own music.

The biggest impact the piano has had so far is on my choir practices. I can play warm ups and play their parts instead of just playing the recording over and over again. We can actually work on the music and on their singing skills. I have 80 students in my choir now and we are already working on our December play. They are learning the music so much faster than they have in the past. It is going to be a great show this year!

    Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chaussey

I teach music to over 500 students from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Over half of my students are from low income households. Many of our students are part of the Dual Language program and are learning in English and Spanish. I also teach a before school choir and we have a 5th grade performance every year. I have many students who participate in music outside of school, but for other students, these activities are the first time they get to experience performing on stage. I have many budding musicians who are so excited to be a part of my musical groups and sing, play instruments, and dance.
