The benefits of reading starts as early as infancy. According to a study done by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2014, it was discovered that "reading exerts a positive effect on the developing brain" of children. Also, research suggests that kids and teens who read fiction are better able to understand their emotions and the emotions of others. They develop a stronger understanding of empathy. A diverse classroom library gives my students an opportunity to not only find books that relates to their lives, but can give them a look into other peoples lives.
Diverse classroom libraries allow students to find themselves in children's literature. My goal as a teacher is to make sure I have at least one book that supports each of my individual students and relate to their lives. For example, for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, "El Deafo," "Left Out," and "Song for a Whale" all represent kids with hearing losses, while "The Benefits of Being an Octopus" represents people who are homeless. Books such as "The Mighty Miss Malone" describes African Americans lives during the depression, "Wonder" highlights the life of a child with Treacher Collins Syndrome, and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" is about a teenager with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Your donation will give students opportunities to love reading by choosing books they want to read, having time throughout the day to read those books, and allowing book talks so they can share about their books. Giving students time to read and providing them choice, will increase the joy of reading for those students who already enjoy it and create an enjoyment of reading for those students who struggle.
