  • Help Bring Our School Mascot Back

    Funded Sep 21, 2023

Shortly after receiving our Curtis E. Lion mascot, we put it to good use. Currently, our school mascot is visiting classrooms on a weekly basis as an attendance incentive reward. All our children with improved attendance get a special visit from the mascot as well as a picture to commemorate their accomplishment.

We are looking forward to our Spring events, where Curtis E. Lion will be visiting outdoor events such as Stepping Up ceremonies, carnivals and even Orientations. We are grateful for the generosity of our donors in bringing so much joy to our school community!”

    With gratitude,

  • Quiet Beginnings Make for A Great Day at School!

    Funded Feb 14, 2023

The Mindful Beginnings materials have been very helpful in helping students channel positive emotions as they come in. When students come in tired or upset, they are directed to the mindfulness corner so that they can listen to soothing music, or hug a soft toy. We also included some sensory items that help sooth children.

Most students loved the music! We set up the listening station with 3 headsets so that 3 children can listen at a given time.

It seems like the younger students (3K-2) were able to get the most out of the items funded through this project. They were familiar with the location of the items and how to use them appropriately. What we did not anticipate was that they would be used throughout the day, this was an added plus!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cascante

  • Please Help Me Set Up a Mindfulness Room for Students.

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

We are so excited to have our mindfulness room up and running! We gave the room a fresh coat of paint, a subtle gray, in preparation for our materials. Materials arrived very promptly and we set to work right away!

Now that the space is set up, we have assigned our Social Work Intern to oversee the meditation room. We have created a PSA (Public Service Announcement) to let students know about the Mindfulness room. A schedule has been drafted so that student may visit the room in a supervised manner.

Students are excited to visit the room and engage in self-care as they learn about different breathing and relaxation techniques.”

  • First Grade Writers In Need Of Basic Supplies!

    Funded Jan 24, 2015

We were so delighted to receive our package of supplies in our first grade classroom! The children were so excited to open up the boxes. And of course, who can resist the smell of new crayons? My first grade students were aware that the materials were coming from people that they did not know. They were very humbled in knowing that there were people out there who were so willing to give to others. They kept saying: "That is so nice of them!".

Because we were in dire need of these materials, they were opened immediately! We filled our empty boxes with crayons, sharpened our new pencils and got right to work! It was amazing to see how motivated they became with these brand-new materials. They were so excited to start writing and creating wonderful pieces. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.”

  • Language Activities for English Language Learners.

    Funded Nov 11, 2011

We are so grateful for your generous contributions to our project on DonorsChoose. We received all the materials almost immediately after the project was funded. We got to work right away and the children have been able to use these materials during the regular school day as well as during their Extended Day time.

Our English Language Learners have been able to practice their sight words and explore the syntax of the English language by building magnetic sentences. Their letter writing has improved so much too!”

  • Ayudame a Leer! Spanish Books Needed for my ELL Classroom

    Funded Aug 17, 2011

We are so grateful for your generous donation to our classroom. We received our books in Spanish in September and we are happy to announce that we now have a section in Spanish in our classroom library! Since The titles that I chose were mostly titles that I already owned in English, we have been able to read the same book in both languages during our Read Alouds.

The Spanish-speaking children are delighted to hear these books and I've allowed them to "check out" the books to take home and read to/with their parents.

    Again, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cascante
