Young children with multiple & severe disabilities have many academic and social challenges that cannot be met with traditional curriculum and teaching methods alone. They require intense, specialized instruction at their individual ability levels that is not only engaging, but also motivating enough to capture and maintain their significant struggles with attention and focus.
My students will benefit from the materials and learning tasks in this dramatic play project that will meet their unique academic and social learning needs while increasing and maintaining their attention to tasks that are engaging and fun. The community helper costumes and real-life play toys will allow my students to fully immerse themselves in dramatic play scenarios in the classroom where they can use their imaginations to play police officer, firefighter, doctor, chef, server, farmer, teacher, clerk and many more. They will be working on their math, reading, writing and language skills during the role-play scenarios with individualized task cards made for each community helper role. This type of learning through structured play will not only help increase their academic and language skills, but it will also have a positive impact on other significant deficits such as their social and fine motor skills.
The learining tasks will be developed at each students individual ability level using pre-made printed task cards that will be laminated for continuous practice. The task cards will include menus, checklists, order forms, etc..., and will gradually increase in level as the students progress. The role-play scenarios will help the students use and develop crucial language and social skills. The real-life toys will encourage students to fully engage in the role-play while they are learning to count, sort, read and write. This type of learning play will also stimulate their minds to collaborate wth one another and develop critical thinking skills.
