One in five students learning to read and write learn in a nontraditional way. These students require an approach that is systematic and accumulative in design. For these students, having tactile or engaging activities to develop their phonological skills (ability to relate the sounds and letters) increases the chance of success. The multiple modalities that are addressed in my classroom are visual (seeing the letters), auditory (hearing the sounds), tactile (touching, feeling with their hands), and kinesthetic (movement through the whole body). Intermediate students learning basic word blending/building are more willing to engage in enrichment activities when it is presented in an age-appropriate manner. Sets, such as the word building dice, tactile vowels, and sandpaper letters, encourage manipulation of sounds and word reading skills in a tactile way. The sets such as audible timers and headphones support with auditory skills. The tracking or highlighter tape supports visual tracking in texts. The visual timers allow the students to time manage while focusing on the task at hand. The items on my wish list are all support tools, visual trackers, visual and auditory timers, and tactile learning tools. The students who I teach do not have access to all of these tools without support from donors like you!
