Bringing History into Historical Fiction--Fighting Injustice
Funded Nov 19, 2013It was so inspiring to see how many generous, caring people worked together to bring this project to life. These texts have been a wonderful support to my reading classes' literature studies on fighting prejudice and injustice. My students have been more engaged in learning with the true accounts about the experiences of young people their age in "Freedom's Children: Young Civil Rights Activists Tell Their Own Stories" and the ability to put themselves into the shoes of the activists through the "You Choose" series books.
My English classes read the memoir "The Circuit," about author Francisco Jiménez's experience in elementary and junior high as a migrant worker. At the end of the story, I was able to suggest his second two books, "Breaking Through" and "Reaching Out," and check them out to many students thanks to the funding from this project. My students were eager to learn more about how Francisco overcame the economic hardships his family faced through high school and college, going on to become a successful professional. I hope my students can have a new role model by following the example of this author and how he transformed his life through hard work and education. In addition, we have been able to learn more about the work of Latino human rights activists such as Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
Thank you again for all of the many donors who gave so generously to this project. Thank you for supporting my students' education and making a real impact on our future!”

Materials for Artistic Expression
Funded Oct 4, 2013Thank you again for your generous donations towards art supplies for my students. These resources are being used frequently in my classroom for a wide variety of projects. For one example, my students can collaborate on visual presentations together and can post their work around the classroom to display what they are learning. I can see my students internalizing what they learn much more when they represent it with graphic organizers and other visual methods.
In addition, students are able to create illustrations and other art work to represent their own unique interpretations and visualizations of what we are reading and studying. These supplies help my students express themselves in different ways and help me better understand their learning processes.
My students were very touched when I told them that the supplies they are using came from private donations to the school. It was a great experience for them to think about all of the ways that others are supporting their education and how they can make the most of the opportunities they have been given to learn and achieve their best. Thank you for making a difference for my students!”

This classroom project was brought to life by an anonymous donor and 12 other donors.Launching the Love of Literature
Funded Aug 10, 2010Thank you so much for all of your help and support. My students love the new books. They are excited about reading, and the books hardly stay on the shelf for long before they are checked out by a new student. The library at our school has a fairly slim selection of books, so it is wonderful to be able to provide my students with a second, more convenient way to stay caught up with the popular titles they are interested in. Thanks again for helping make our classroom library so inviting!”

Bringing Local Authors into the Classroom
Funded Aug 11, 2010Thank you so much for your donations. The books you donated have truly enriched our classroom library. My students love having books written by local authors in the classroom. The books have been highly circulated, and students always want to know when a copy will be available for them.
The books first arrived a couple weeks into school, and the box was delivered while a group of students were in the room. They were eager to see what had come for the classroom. I briefly showed them the titles and explained that they were all written by local authors. The students immediately wanted to read them--Rapunzel's Revenge was a particularly coveted item that my students absolutely loved. They begged for the sequel, Calamity Jack. It's great to see them so excited about reading. In addition to the already well know Fablehaven series, many of them have become interested in the Jimmy Fincher and Thirteenth Reality series, in addition to many more. Thanks again for your help and support.”
