That line about reading being fundamental is so true. Yet, kids today don't want to read as much, especially since we have so much technology around. I want to change that. I want my students to fall in love with reading like I did when I was a kid. Reading will help my students become better students and better people. They will be able to use the skills they learn in my language arts class to understand anything they read. And they will learn life skills, such as compassion and empathy, through reading. I also want my students to see themselves in the books they read, which is why I asked for their input on this list. Some asked for specific books, such as "Al Capone Does My Shirts", and others asked for just graphic novels or nonfiction books. I also included some books that some students told me were their favorites, like "The Giving Tree" and "The Boxcar Children." Because my students had a say in what books are going into their classroom library, I know they will be excited to read them!
