Please Help our First Maker Space Dream Come True!
Funded Mar 24, 2017Oh man, this project was a big one and y'all really made some tremendous dreams come true! Thank you very much for the resources you provided to my curious makers. I cannot describe to you how much it means to us to have all of the materials we needed for us to have a real maker club. The tools and 3D printer are being used again and again to create new useful and/or beautiful things.
As you can see, our scholars' eyes got huge as they opened up the boxes. Every material they had ever wanted was in there – the wood and wood glue was something we had none of and they love to woodwork so that is a big deal! They couldn't even believe the news that we have a 3D printer. When I explained what we could make with it, one of them exclaimed, "You've GOT to be kidding me!"
There are no official lessons in a Maker Club, rather everyone builds or creates whatever their mind and heart wants to. Obviously, the wood and tiles quickly got turned into castles, vases, bridges, and so much more. Another really cool project that a number of our scholars, especially the boys, completed was making pillows for their moms. You can see them using the fabric cutting tools in one of the pictures. We are so proud of them and their moms were overjoyed!
The next step for us is that our small maker space and club, which was only about 15 scholars, is now open to the whole school. Our technology teachers are using the 3D printer in their classes so that all 950 PK-5th grade students can gain exposure to and use this fabulous tool. Our GT (Gifted and Talented) lead has built out her maker space, too, and is using some of our materials with our many GT scholars to be showcased monthly to our community.
We are so grateful for your generosity and willingness to support us in this cutting-edge endeavor. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Beakers and Balances to Help Us Break Barriers!
Funded Dec 20, 2016Thank you very much for the resources you provided to my curious scholars! I cannot describe to you how much it means to us to have real science materials so that the students can have hands-on experiences. The materials allow us to learn about how to use two of the most valuable science tools and guarantee that we will understand how they are used, with the added benefit of gaining more exposure to measurement, a crossover math skill.
One of the lessons in which we used your generous donation was where we made a cloud. You can see in the photograph that the young scientists are looking at a beaker containing boiling water (something we could not have done until we had some glassware) with a pie pan of cold ice on top, thereby creating a "cloud." The other day, one of my sweet bilingual learners asked me, "Do you remember the other day when we made a cloud?" So, obviously, you have already had an impact.
Right now, my 947 PK – 5th scholars and I are trying to build a Maker Space where we will continue to engage in all sorts of useful and artistic endeavors, such as sewing, 3D printing, woodwork, and circuitry. Please visit our other project in Donor's Choose if you like to support the type of hands-on learning we experienced with your help for this project: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/please-help-our-first-maker-space-dream/2376420/?rf=link-siteshare-2017-03-teacher-teacher_3967512&challengeid=20856674
Again, we couldn't have "sat next to a cloud" without you! Thank you!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Brumlow
