My students need items in which will create sensory experiences that can be tailored to utilize during academic tasks. For example, my students will use a bendable wax strip to create the word (or words) that they are learning or physically count using a manipulative. Students with sensory processing disorders need various items in order to maintain focus and to decrease environmental stressors. A student may find some noises such as the air flow from the a/c as painful. By having a special set of headphones, the noise is no longer painful and the student is set up for academic success. Another student may come to school upset and a weighted blanket will provide a calming sensation in which the student is able to calm down. Students often need something to keep busy while learning to wait. "Waiting" happens while they wait for their turn during a game or for a turn in a physical movement break during the obstacle course. Students will use theraputty to work on fine motor skills, have a sensory experience in which helps calm, and keep busy.
