  • School Supplies = Success

    Funded Oct 27, 2022

It never ceases to amaze me what students can do when they're set up with right tools for the job. Your generous donation and the kindness you've shared with these fifth grades is astounding, and it has allowed us to start the school year off on the right track and maintain that wonderful momentum throughout the year. Students can now focus on the challenge of learning rather than worry whether they have the right supplies. That's a huge difference you've made in their ability to progress and grow this year.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Biggie

  • (Lit)erally for Every 5th Grader

    Funded Jan 10, 2023

It's humbling to see the generosity from our community, and it gives me so much hope that one day my fifth graders will return the acts of kindness they have received. It's one of the lessons we've discussed throughout the novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. This book has taught us that kindness, empathy, and open heart are the true needs for happiness. So it is through your kindness, empathy, and through your open heart that we receive your gifts. You've made it possible for every fifth grader to have their own copy of this extraordinary novel.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Biggie

  • Listen Up! We Want Premium Access to Podcasts!

    Funded Oct 16, 2022

Listenwise Premium has surpassed my expectations in our 5th grade classroom! Thank you for the generous donations that allow us to use and benefit from this program. Our listening comprehension, our knowledge of podcasts, and our vocabulary acquisition has improved since we've started using Listenwise Premium on a weekly basis. Students hear cross-curricular stories that tie into our ELA, science, or social studies. Their quiz is only 4 questions, and scores are provided immediately. This program is showing amazing growth!”

  • Show Me the Money!

    Funded Aug 15, 2022

Number sense in fifth grade is a huge foundation that is shaky at the beginning of the school year. Students are not confident with our base ten system of numbers, and they struggle with being flexible in problem solving. In fifth grade we not only need to master whole numbers, but we also dive into decimals. One place we see decimals in the real world is with money.

Your generous donation for hands-on coins and paper bills allows us to practice working with whole number and decimal place value to build those foundational number sense skills.”

  • Books on Rotation

    Funded Aug 2, 2022

In fifth grade, we have lots of kiddos in a classroom. Some of them are the biggest kiddos in the school. However, the square footage of our classroom is not any bigger than any other classroom, leaving us with less space for all these kids to move around.

Extra furniture takes up a lot of that precious space, so your generous donation for a rotating bookshelf solved two problems: (1) having access to a variety of diverse literature and (2) taking up as little floor space as possible. Now, our classroom library can hold twice the amount of books but not take up twice the amount of square footage.

Thank you for keeping us reading and giving us the space needed to do it!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Biggie

  • We've Got Your School Supplies Covered!

    Funded Jul 25, 2022

As a public school teacher, I do not expect families to spend out-of-pocket funds for school supplies. Your generous donation helped fill in the gap for school supplies that our district was not able to provide. Items such as binders and pencil boxes to keep our materials organized, earbuds with microphones so we can produce quality podcasts and videos of our learning, highlighters to enhance our annotations as we read, and Sharpie markers to help make our artwork pop from across the room. We use these items every single day, and I cannot imagine how we would master all the learning in 5th grade without them.

Thank you for setting up these fifth graders for success and letting their families focus their paychecks on other items, like groceries, gas, and utility bills. You made an impact from Day 1 of the school year, and you're thoughtfulness continues to make a difference in our classroom.”

  • Got School Supplies? Yep!

    Funded Jul 31, 2021

Students are in the classroom this year! It was so exciting to welcome them back to campus after the unpredictable school year we all experienced last year. When the classroom doors opened and students took their seats, the inequity with school supplies was clear. Several fifth grade families were unable to obtain school supplies before school started, but it was never a big deal because of your generosity.

You provided binders, page protectors, pencils, erasers, highlighters, earbuds, pencil boxes, dry erase markers, rulers, and folders for several fifth graders. You also provided a sense of safety and security because these students didn't feel left out. You provided a successful start to the most important day in the last 18 months - their first day of school at THEIR school.

Thank you for all that you gave these students. Your act of kindness has touched the hearts of so many fifth graders.”

    With gratitude,

  • Such a Novel Idea!

    Funded Jan 9, 2021

In fifth grade, much of our focus is on diplomatic rights, equity, and moral character as we learn the state-adopted curriculum. The novel "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan is a wonderful historical fiction whose themes easily tie to our year-long focus.

Every year, we struggle to have enough copies of the novel, and this year we had to rely on a digital copy that was tough to navigate. Plus, there's nothing better than the feel of a book in your hand!

With your help, we have enough copies of this novel that will last year after year so many more fifth graders can enjoy Esperanza's journey and Pam Munoz Ryan's message. Thank you for the very generous gift.”

  • Out with the Old. In with the New!

    Funded Sep 10, 2020

Our school site, built in 1979, underwent a major renovation. Over the summer, my fifth grade classroom got new carpet, new paint, a new writable wall, new technology, and a new roof. It felt wrong to welcome a new group of students into a newly refurbished classroom with an old classroom library.

When COVID-19 interrupted the start of our in-person school year, the big reveal was delayed. We were finally able to return to the classroom at the end of September. The students were thrilled with the newest of everything, especially after being home since the previous March. Desks were spaced 6 ft apart, which left little room for any other furniture in the classroom. We were grateful for the wall hanging shelves which freed up needed floor space.

At this time, we are allowed to maintain a minimal classroom library. Books are rotated to maintain safety. Our other shelves are used to display classroom favorites and other supplies for easy access. Thank you for this gift.”

  • Supplies in Check

    Funded Sep 18, 2020

We are used to having a communal supply of everything you could think of in a classroom. Students need a pencil? Head over the Sharpened Pencil cup, and help yourself. Students need a ruler? No problem. Grab one from the basket of rulers to use. A student needs a highlighter? They have five friends offering to share. That all ended with COVID-19.

The need for individual supplies is critical and costly. Our school budget is thin to begin with, and the added need to provide basic supplies for every single student would have been devastating to other line items. In addition, families are risking a reduced paycheck when hours get cut or businesses close their doors due to the pandemic. They should not have to choose between school supplies for their child or food on the table for their family.

This is where you came in. You saved our classroom and our students. We have the supplies we need to learn as we remain physically distanced in the classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Biggie

These materials (markers, electric stapler, colored pencils, sheet protector, dividers, folders, earbuds, glue gun and hot glue sticks) will last all year long and provide every single student access to meet the Common Core standards. One example can be found in 5th grade Earth Science when students need to engineer and design a biodome that incorporates photosynthesis, the water cycle, food chains while addressing population density issues. Fifth graders will also use these supplies to engineer and design a float for their State Project. Lots of creativity to be had! We are targeting STEM and Design Process thinking in 5th grade. Basic supplies will help students build, decorate, and design projects while tracking assessment progress on grade-level standards.
