  • Inspiring Reads!

    Funded Oct 9, 2019

My students were so excited when our delivery of new books arrived! They couldn't wait to dig into new reading material. We are using the books during the independent reading period in our class. Having books at many levels and genres assures a good fit book for each child. It is so exciting to hear students discuss books with their peers. We are going to need to create "wait lists" because so many children are excited to read several of our titles. Thank you for helping build our classroom library. A love of reading can take a child far in life.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. B.

  • First Graders Need Books

    Funded Jan 23, 2018

Thank you for your generous donation to my first grade classroom! Learning to read is one of the major goals for first grade students. Listening to stories increases students vocabulary, assists in learning the structure of stories, and brings enjoyment to beginning readers. The children are listening to the stories you purchased for our classroom while tracking the words in the books. The listening center is always busy! It is especially valuable for the students who are not read to at home and students who are English Language Learners. Students can't wait to see which story is out each day. Thank you for bringing extra joy to first grade!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. B.

  • First Graders Need A Listening Center!

    Funded Aug 9, 2017

Thank you for making such a generous donation to my classroom. Students eagerly await turns to listen to stories. The wireless headsets are so easy for first graders to use. No more tangled messes when they want to get started! Students who are not read to at home often choose to hear the same story multiple times. I already see improvement in their ability to discuss characters and story structures. The listening center is used every single day. You have brought joy to children in my classroom.

The next goal is for the children to begin recording their own voices as they begin to read. I can hardly wait!

First grade is such an important year to foster a love of reading and your donation of a listening center is certainly helping me reach that goal for my children.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. B.

I teach first grade at Roosevelt Elementary in Olympia, Wa. Our school is a title one school with approximately 40 % of our students receiving free or reduced meals and/or weekend food packs. Typical classrooms have 22-26 students of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Roosevelt is a warm and caring place to teach and be a student. We have great PTA and community support. However, budgets are tighter than ever and I need support to make my classroom a rich learning environment for my first graders. I have been teaching 34 years and many of the things I use at school are simply worn out.
