Last winter, I began a semester-long Independent Reading Project with all of my classes. I cobbled together a classroom library through book donations from generous family, friends, colleagues, a local book donation organization, the reading specialist, and titles from my personal collection. Between frequent visits to our school library and books in my classroom library, I was able to pair each of my students with one or more books of interest to them. Multiple studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between the amount a student reads and his or her academic and career success. However, we all know teenagers are reading less than ever before and students won’t read more if they do not get to read books that they enjoy. I want to intentionally promote that enjoyment in my classroom. Last semester, 46 out of 80 of my students borrowed books from my classroom library. Several students borrowed multiple books. These numbers show me that my students need and want to read current books that deal with issues of interest to them. Although we have many amazing titles in the library, often the waiting list to borrow these titles is quite long and discouraging to my teen readers. If students have better access to great books, they are more likely to read more of them. In addition to purchasing books, I am hoping to acquire a sturdy book shelf in which to store them and cold laminate to extend the life of paperback titles. By supporting my project you will be helping my students rediscover their love of reading and helping to build a community of lifelong readers, learners, leaders, and thinkers.
