A majority of my students are below grade level in math. They struggle visualizing numbers and need manipulatives that they can touch and examine. Many also do not speak English outside of the school. While numbers are universal, the reading that goes along with math is not. The manipulatives help them to create a picture of what the problem is saying. They can then examine the manipulatives and come up with an answer. Having the manipulatives organized will allow them greater access to them and also save class time. This will give us more time to explore math concepts and get a better grasp on the knowledge. As it is right now, all math manipulatives are stored together in bags inside a large tote. What I would like to do is get enough containers that the manipulatives can be stored around the classroom already separated and ready for group work. Having smaller storage containers would allow the students to walk over, get the container they need for the center, and then quickly get started exploring the math concept.
