As an elementary school educator, we not only teach academics, but we teach the whole child. Academic demands are increasing just as the need for students to build coping skills is growing. The materials in this grant will provide our K-5 students with tools that can be used to de-escalate and to calm students so they are ready to learn. Our goal is to create calming caddies and kits that students can use to shift negative emotions to more positive ones. The idea behind the caddies is to teach the students to regulate their own emotions through the use of literature and hands-on sensory items that create calming feelings. The pull and stretch balls, fidget toys, sand-timers, and Play Doh are all hands-on tools that relieve stress and anxiety which allow students to refocus so they can be ready to learn. Additionally, empowering students through the use of storybooks, allows them to develop coping strategies which will help them manage their emotions, and create a positive sense of self. Studies have shown that "students with the highest well being at one time point demonstrated the strongest academic performance (grade point average) and lowest rates of school absences one year later (Suldo, Thalji, & Ferron, 2011). An educators greatest goal is for their students to grow both emotionally and academically. This grant would allow us to provide them with the tools for individual emotional success.
