  • Let’s Experience Science!

    Funded May 13, 2024

Your donations of science materials to my classroom have had a profound impact on my students.

Students have had an enhanced learning experience through hands-on learning experiences on the layers of the Earth. The model of the Earth's layers has helped students understand complex concepts that are not easily visible, making learning more tangible.

The flower cross-section model has sparked curiosity and excitement, leading to increased student engagement and participation. Students were even motivated to bring in flowers from their neighborhoods for dissection!

The students also love the ukulele to help better understand how sound travels. We took a video of a students playing the ukulele and edited it to slow down to actually see the strings vibrating.

  • Cozy Seating to Help Create Lifetime Readers

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

Thank you so much for your donations. My students love their new comfortable seating options!

When we received the items, we held a classroom meeting to discuss how we will be responsible and respectful for them. The students brainstormed a list of things we can and cannot do while we are in the bean bag chair, the floor seats, and the pillow. They also wanted to brainstorm a way for us to share the items and make sure everyone gets a turn using the bean bag chair. It was their idea to use the bus numbers each week! We came up with essential agreements, signed off on the list, and were ready to start using them the next day!

The students use the items for flexible seating mostly during independent reading, just as I stated in my project proposal. They have been so motivated by the comfortable seating choices that they absolutely love reading time! The have surprised me about how responsible and cooperative they can be when it comes to caring and sharing the seats! They also have been very attentive to putting them away in the special spots so they don't get ruined when we are moving around for math or science.

My favorite thing to share is that recently they finished their first narrative writing and we invited the 1st graders to our classroom to share our writing process and our books with them. When the younger students arrived, my students were so excited to get out the flexible seating for them to sit in while they heard the stories. I was so impressed about how responsible they were when working with the younger students! I think this year they really have learned how to take ownership of their classroom and really care for the items in it. This is owed to having these special seats!

Thank you for donating to my classroom and I know my students will never forget your generosity! Either will I!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schrank

These new flexible seating options will allow my students more places to sit other then their desk or the carpet. Right now I only have a few options that I have bought with my own funds. Each student in 4th grade should be able to read on their reading level for at least 20 minutes without any interruptions. This is very difficult to do from a desk or on the carpet for 20 straight minutes. Imagine reading at your kitchen table or on the floor for 20 minutes! I would love for my students to have the chance to move around in the room and find their perfect spot to read! I would use these chairs and pillow for independent reading time and allow the students to choose where to sit. We will have a system in place for taking turns so each students gets a chance to use the bean bag chair and the giant pillow. The more they have a chance to dive into a book in their comfort zone, the chance is they will want to read more!! I don't just teach students to read; I also want them to find a passion to want to read!!
