  • Miscellaneous Musical Materials

    Funded Dec 31, 2024

What a special way to start the new year! Before leaving for winter break, students in every grade level used BoomWhackers with some play-along videos, and many students were upset to see that our BoomWhackers had started to crack from years of repeated use. I can’t wait to show them these brand new replacements! Active music-making is a truly joyful experience, and thanks to donors like you, my students will get to continue doing so in a beautiful, tuneful way. Your support means a lot to us!”

    With gratitude,

  • Plenty of Pianos

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you for helping us add to our collection of keyboards! My students truly love getting to use these instruments. For many of them, this is the first/only exposure they have had with a keyboard. While some students enjoy sharing with a partner, many prefer to practice songs on their own. With your donation, we were able to purchase 3 more, which allows more students to use them at one time. From changing the different tones, to creating percussion beats, to recording their own tunes, students are absolutely loving these keyboards, and we have you, our generous donors, to thank!”

  • Stories and Songs: Building Our Music Library, Pt. 4

    Funded May 10, 2024

These new titles have been a hit! My students were thrilled to see the Taylor Swift and Harry Styles books, as they always love to learn about their favorite pop artists. One student asked if she could borrow the Frank Sinatra book because she listens to his music with her family and wanted to learn more about him! This month we begin learning about Edvard Grieg, so the Mountain King story is already displayed proudly on our bookshelf. Your donations have helped my students connect their love of music with their love of reading, and we are so grateful for your continued support!”

  • Making Melodies

    Funded May 10, 2024

This was such a fun project to get funded! The Mel-o-dee balls are bright, colorful, easy to squeeze, and reminiscent of the sounds of a bicycle horn (in the best way possible)! These instruments arrived in time for our spring concert, which allowed us to have many more instrumentalists accompanying the singers for a silly summer song. We used the Alphadots to label the notes needed for a xylophone ostinato, which made it so easy for the students to follow along, as the colors and letters matched the labels on the bars. So again, donors, thank you for supporting our classroom and giving my students these opportunities!”

  • From Discs to Digital

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

WOW - thank you Donors and thank you DonorsChoose for funding and shipping this iPad so quickly! This iPad came in just in time for us to use it at our winter concert! Loading our concert songs on was so simple, and I was able play them via Bluetooth connected to a large speaker. This allowed me to circulate the auditorium during rehearsals and control the music independently at the concert. I can't wait to use this for future performances, and to find other ways to use it in class. My students and I are so appreciative and want to thank you again for helping to upgrade our technology!”

  • Comfy Classroom Seating, Pt. 2

    Funded Aug 15, 2023

We love these stools! They are the perfect size for kindergarten and first grade students. We're only a few weeks into the school year, but we've already gotten so much use out of them. So far, I've mostly had students use them when working in small groups, and a few hardworking kiddos have earned sitting in the "comfy seats" during class. But since they're lightweight and portable, we can use them for all sorts of things! Different configurations for seating during singing games and dances, or to represent a 4-beat pattern, or even as xylophone stands! Your donation has immediately impacted my students in such a positive and joyful way, and we are truly grateful!”

  • Ready to Restock

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

These items came in right at the start of the school year and we were immediately able to put them to use! I was able to finish setting up my classroom with the painters tape, which is the best adhesive for hanging posters, anchor charts, and bulletin boards on our classroom walls. I made several new games with the colored cardstock for when students break into groups to practice melodic and rhythmic concepts. And now all of the work boxes are ready with sharp new pencils and fresh crayons and will last us most of the year! My students and I are set up for a successful new school year thanks to donors like you!”

  • Stories and Songs: Building Our Music Library, Pt. 3

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

Thank you again for kindly contributing to our project for more children's literature for the music room. With your donations, I was able to purchase several more picture books, some with audio clips or CDs included, that appeal to my young students. "Play This Book" and "I Spy Music" have been perfect for my beginning readers for independent reading, and we were able to use "The Quiet Book" while practicing safety procedures. I borrowed "Coat of Many Colors" to use with my third graders, who absolutely loved listening to this story along with Dolly Parton's music. "Creative Activities" is my favorite so far; it provides a plethora of engaging and exciting musical activities that I can use immediately with my students, as it has a variety of full lesson plans with many options for modifications and extensions. Thank you for your continued support!”

  • Musicians Inspiring Musicians

    Funded Oct 7, 2022

We love these new biographies! So far my students have been reading them mostly during free choice time or upon completing their work, and it's so fun to see which ones they gravitate to and want to learn more about. I already have a few ideas in mind on how to create some new units using these books as a foundation.

Some anecdotes from last week- one student collected the "Little People Big Dreams" series into her arms and begged to take the whole set home! Another student chose to borrow "Who was Johnny Cash?," with plans to borrow "Who is Bruce Springsteen?" next, because her father enjoys listening to their music! I love that students are able to bond with their families over musical preferences and develop their own musical identities along the way. Thank you so much again for supporting my wonderful students!”

Specialist teachers have a unique job in that we get to teach all students in the building. Over the course of four years, I get to watch these children mature, grow, and bloom. Our school environment is one where students are challenged and encouraged to do their best learning, with the support of their teachers and peers. I teach music to over 500 students, Grades 1-4 and split between two school buildings. Music, especially in the educational system, is something that has always been important to me. It brings all different types of people together, and creates a positive energy and sense of camaraderie that is hard to find elsewhere. No matter how different my students are, for the 40 minutes they're in that room together they're working toward the exact same goal. That is something I have always found fascinating.
