Like any first-year teacher, I am inheriting the supplies of my predecessors. While I am *incredibly* grateful for everything I have at my discretion, many of the supplies are out-of-date and/or not relevant to today’s student. The supplies also need to address the vast array of needs my students have, which range from pre-K to eighth grade. Since my office is off-limits to no one, I feel it needs to be as multi-faceted as its visitors. My hope for the space is for it to eventually become a one-stop emotional shop, catering to students seeking serenity from sensory overload (Wobble Stool), stimulation (SensoryMoon Floor Lamp), or a calm-down corner (Adjustable LED Lights). I would love to turn the space into an area kids gravitate towards, not based on the manipulatives or tangibles, but because of the feng shui of the room. Right now, it mostly looks like an office with some kid-friendly items thrown in haphazardly. I would like to replace the “office-type” items (i.e. standard shelf for books / storage) with something more age-appropriate for the population I serve (i.e. Bookcase w/ Reading Nook / Colorful Rolling Storage Trolley). My experience has been that children are more apt to open up when they feel like the adults in their lives understand them; I want the office where I work with them to send that message. It needs to say “We’re on the same level,” in addition to catering to the needs of the modern-day student. I know it will take some time and a lot of effort, but once converted, I am confident it will meet the social-emotional needs of my current and future students!
