One of the primary reasons I became an English Language Arts teacher is because I love to read. Reading for pleasure is part of my daily routine like brushing my teeth or eating dinner. I want my students to share that same passion. On a daily basis my students tackle very difficult on reading level texts that focus on big life issues like perseverance, freedom and equity. They work hard but they don't always find enjoyment in our district mandated curriculum. For home and independent reading, I want to make sure that they feel successful and enjoy the process. Graphic novels are a great resource for struggling readers because they reinforce reading comprehension skills, and incorporate higher level vocabulary in an easily digestible format, these are things my students need to master to become fluent readers. Regardless of the research and pedagogical reasoning, graphic novels, manga and comic books are what my students are clamoring to read. The few graphic novels, comic books and manga I have in my small classroom library are the books that circulate the most. When I took requests from students for our elective program, I received several requests for a manga and anime class, comic book reading and writing class and a graphic novel course. I jumped at the chance to crate this elective because although geared to be fun, I know my students will improve their reading stamina, comprehension and fluency by reading books they are truly interested in reading. The books I receive from this project will help me engage my struggling readers, support their interest and create a reading habit that will serve them well beyond my middle school classroom.
