What if young theater goers developed an abiding interest in theater that kept them off the streets, changed their perspectives, assisted them with basic skills, allowed them to dream the impossible (college/career) and found hope? What if young theater students wrote words in a play, brought them to life on stage, presented, and not only changed other lives, but changed their own lives? Many students who have gone on to attend college recount just that. All of my 9-12 grade students live below poverty line, representing 21% of families here and the state average is 14%.(2000 US Census Bureau.) As a theater teacher for twenty plus years, I have heard countless stories from former students who said ,"Theater changed my life". "The skills I acquired (speaking, writing, acting) were invaluable." My goal is to assist in changing more lives and my students (I am proud to say) are taking the lead and giving back!
