Students learn better in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable. As teachers, we are often told this over and over again. So, we strive to form positive relationships with our students and make our classroom a welcoming and desirable place to be. Recently, flexible seating has become one strategy towards accomplishing this. Flexible seating involves offering an array of different seating options (traditional tables, floor seating, different chairs, etc) as a way of not only offering students choice and autonomy, but also as a way for students to find what works best for their learning style. Many teachers have reported less to no behavioral problems and higher test scores in classrooms with flexible seating. My goal is to create a classroom with flexible seating options to help my students learn better, and keep them engaged physically as well. Students bodies in middle school are going through so many changes that they are often physically uncomfortable in traditional seating. After seeing flex seating work in other schools, I would like to try to use flexible seating in my class. Please help make it happen!
