  • Becoming Little Builders

    Funded Nov 30, 2016

I am extremely grateful for your generosity in helping fun this project for my students. When we received the materials, we were eager to open and start exploring. Students and I discussed where we should keep the materials and how we can utilize them during center time.

My students have have been able to engage in conversations motivated by the Kids Around the World Block Play People as well as the Lakeshore Community Block Play People. Students' conversations have included different countries they would like to visit as well as how we can learn about different cultures. The Nature Blocks have provided students a way to interact with goals that remind them of the outside world without having to leave the classroom. Students have made connections with builders and how materials are made. The Build-It Yourself Woodworking Kit gave students the opportunity to create using wood glue and nails. Students creations included, suitcases, cars, and writing boards.

The materials that were so kindly donated to our classroom have been key in creating many learning opportunities. Again, I am so thankful for donors like you that have invested in the future of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ali

  • Science and Discovery

    Funded Mar 21, 2016

    Dear Donors,

I am extremely grateful for your generosity in helping fun this project for my students. When we received the materials, we were very excited to open and take a look. Before we could begin exploring with the materials, we had to take a look at the materials and how we would be able to use them. I displayed the materials for the students who could not have responded in a more eager way. Students immediately began to ask where they would be able to play with them and when they could start.

My students have have been able to engage in hands on experiments using the eyedroppers and test tubes. Students were able to test ideas of absorption, color mixing, and the idea of solutions. The Shapes and Colors Discovery Set allowed students the opportunity to engage in a meaningful sensory science and math exploration. Students were able to identify shapes, explore texture, as well as count and sort. The GeoSafari Talking Microscope provided students with an independent learning experience. They were able to look at slides, hear information, and write notes in their science notebooks. The Space Sand Pack sparked students curiosity. Students were so intrigues by the sand that we took used various recipes to try to create our own. Although we were unsuccessful, we learned a lot along the way.

The materials that were so kindly donated to our classroom have been key in creating many learning opportunities. Again, I am so thankful for donors like you that have invested in the future of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ali

I have a group of eighteen children that have a great passion to learn. My students learn best when they are using hands on materials to deepen their learning. Our school is located in the Bronx where families don't always have all the means necessary to provide tactile learning manipulative. I believe schools should level the playing field by providing these items. Unfortunately, our second year program does not have the funding necessary to provide these materials. I can't imagine a more fulfilling feeling than seeing the "aha" moments that are soon to come!
