Our classroom is in need of a small laminator to create visual aids for our special education students. This is for their organizational needs as well as providing consistency in their schedules and recognizing facial expressions. Other needed resources include a weighted lap blanket, sensory items and LCD writing tablets. The LCD writing tablets will eliminate the need for paper, white boards and white board markers. It is a high interest tool that allows them to engage in academics without some of the lagging skills of organization. They can be used in all academic and social emotional learning opportunities without having the expense of an ipad or computers. Our students demonstrate difficulty determining what emotions they are feeling and how to manage those feelings. They are learning how to appropriately communicate their needs without unexpected physical demonstrations. By providing a weighted blanket and sensory tools and facial expression training, they will be able to practice their behavior replacement skills in a safe and nonjudgmental environment while still focusing on accessing academic demands. By providing specific program instruction in the area of behavior regulation, these students are learning coping strategies as well as identifying their feelings, choosing strategies that work for them and learning to use them in live small group social and academic opportunities. These skills are greatly needed in order for them to be successful individuals not only at school but in all environments now and in their future. Join us as we Learn To Breathe!
