An empty classroom fosters no inspiration. My classroom is bare with nothing yet in it to motivate or excite my students about science and biology. Additionally, most of my students live in a huge urban city with little to no first-hand experience observing interactions in nature. I believe a palodarium will inspire and excite students while also teaching them about ecosystem interactions. A palodarium uses an aquarium tank and has both water and land elements. In it, I plan on raising living plants and animals including fire bellied toads along with small fish, shrimp, and tiny invertebrates to clean up waste from the frogs and a variety of appropriate plants. Fire bellied toads are one of the easiest pets to care for and they get their name from the bright red or orange coloration on their bellies to warn predators of them being mildly toxic. The coloration warning is another teacher topic to show aposematism, an evolutionary advantage. Having this resource inside my classroom will motivate students to care and think about the connections everything has in nature. I clearly remember my middle school and high school science rooms, and I want my students to remember mine.
